Guide · Shoes and gear
Where to buy running shoes and gear in Seoul.
If you arrived without shoes, lost a bag, or just want to walk into a real running shop, here is where to go. Sorted by what you are actually trying to do.
Where to go
Five kinds of shop, in rough order of usefulness.
1. Running Lab, the dedicated running shop
Running Lab in Sinsa is the closest thing Seoul has to a proper run-specialty store. Multiple brands on one floor (Asics, Hoka, On, Brooks, Saucony at various times), gait analysis with treadmill video, real fitting staff, race nutrition in the back. If you only have time for one stop, this is it. Expect to pay full retail; the value is the fitting and the range, not the price.
2. Brand flagship stores
The major running brands all have flagships in Seoul, mostly clustered in three neighbourhoods. They carry full current lines, more sizes than the multi-brand stores, and brand-only colourways.
- Gangnam Station / Sinsa, Nike, Adidas, On, Asics, Hoka all have stores within walking distance.
- Myeongdong, Nike, Adidas, ABC Mart all sit on the main shopping streets.
- Hannam / Itaewon, Adidas, On and smaller boutique running stockists.
- Seongsu (the "Brooklyn of Seoul"), Salomon, Asics and Nike concept stores, all with weekly community runs.
3. ABC Mart, the everywhere shoe chain
ABC Mart is the general sneaker chain you will see in every neighbourhood. It carries running models from Nike, Adidas, Asics, Mizuno, Saucony and a few others, usually a season behind the flagship. Sizes run out quickly in popular models. Useful as a fallback if you cannot make it to a brand store or to Running Lab.
4. Decathlon
Two big-box Decathlons in greater Seoul (Songpa and Gimpo) carry entry-level kit, own-brand Kalenji running shoes, basic shorts, hydration vests, hats, at prices well below the brand stores. Good for if you forgot a base layer or need a cheap pair of training shoes; not where you go for a race-day shoe.
5. Outlet malls (out of town)
If you have a day, the Hyundai Premium Outlets at Gimpo and Yeoju have brand outlets for Nike, Adidas, Hoka, On, Asics and others, with discounts on previous-season stock. Plan half a day round-trip from central Seoul.
What is easy, what is harder
A blunt list.
Easy to find: mainstream Nike, Adidas, Asics, Hoka, On road shoes; lightweight tops; hats; cheap visors; sports bras up to standard sizes; energy jellies at convenience stores.
Available but worth checking: trail shoes (Salomon, La Sportiva, Hoka Speedgoat, usually only at the brand flagships); larger sizes (US 13+ for men, US 11+ for women); wide widths.
Harder to find: Maurten, SIS, Tailwind nutrition outside Running Lab; trail-running watches in stock (Garmin Forerunner stock is reliable; Fenix and Coros are easier to order than to walk in for); minimalist / barefoot shoes; women's larger sports bra sizes.
FAQ
Short answers.
-
Where can I buy running shoes in Seoul?
The brand flagships (Nike, Adidas, On, Hoka, Asics, Salomon) all have stores in Myeongdong, Gangnam Station and Seongsu/Hannam. Running Lab is the dedicated multi-brand running shop in Sinsa/Gangnam with proper gait analysis. ABC Mart is the general shoe chain, present in every major neighbourhood, and is the easiest place to find mainstream running shoes at retail. Decathlon has two big-box stores in the Seoul area for entry-level kit.
-
Are running shoes cheaper in Korea than in the US or Europe?
About the same, sometimes slightly more for imported brands. Korean Asics is competitively priced; On and Hoka tend to be at or slightly above US retail. Sales happen twice a year, late spring and after Chuseok in autumn, and the brand outlets at Hyundai Premium Outlets (Yeoju, Gimpo) carry deeper discounts on previous-season stock.
-
Can I find my size?
For most western men, yes. Korean retail stocks up to about US 12 (EU 46) reliably across the major brands. Above that, it gets harder; brand flagships and Running Lab are more likely to have larger sizes than ABC Mart. For women, sizes up to about US 10 (EU 41) are easy. If you wear an unusual size, the brand flagship is the safer bet than a multi-brand store.
-
Where do I buy GU, gels, race nutrition?
Running Lab carries the full Maurten and SIS range. Brand stores carry their own (Nike with NIIKE energy gels, On has limited stock). Convenience stores carry energy jellies (CU and GS25 stock OTOOM and similar Korean brands) which are fine for training but not for serious race fuelling. For a marathon weekend, stock up at Running Lab before race day.
If you have just arrived
Lost-a-bag situations are normal here.
If you are running with me and forgot a piece of kit, message before the run and I can usually point you toward the closest shop on the route. Most are open from late morning to late evening seven days a week.
